Navigating the Prahran Market

Prahran Market

163 Commercial Road, South Yarra

Tues, Thurs & Sat 7am - 5pm
Sun 10am - 3pm
Prahran market, just off Chapel Street on Commercial Road, South Yarra, is one of Melbourne’s most popular destinations for food shopping. Rather than wheeling a trolley around the supermarket aisles, the pleasure comes from picking up the produce, whether fruit or vegetables and smelling its freshness.
There are so many stalls to choose from. So I thought I would highlight some of my favourite places where I regularly shop.
Damien Pike

Damian Pike

Wild Mushroom Specialist • Stall 116

Damian is old school in his approach that is born out of his love for all things mushroom. You can so tell by the way he carefully stores and displays them. Damian specialises in over 40 different types of mushrooms, including local, imported and exotic mushrooms as well as black and white truffles, white asparagus, China flat peaches and anything else that’s a little unusual and often difficult to find. And he loves to talk anything mushroom, so I never leave without discussing his latest mushroom recipe. He’ll only sell what he eats himself and is only too happy to offer his expert advice. When I can’t get down to the Mornington Peninsula to pick my own pine and slippery jack mushrooms, I go here.

I love his mantra, “Cook ‘em fast, eat ‘em slow. That’s the way to go.”

Gary’s Quality Meats

Gary’s Quality Meats

Butcher • Stall 515

This is my favourite butcher in the whole of Melbourne. They are truly a cook’s dream. Any cut of meat you could possibly want can be found here. And the quality is incredible. Everything is organically produced and they also dry age their meat on site. There’s also a huge range of free range, grass-fed, dry aged and organic meats. You should try their Saltbush lamb and their Berkshire pork. I love their Robins Island Wagyu and their award-winning preservative free sausages. I rarely leave without buying their famous Thai spicy snag.

All the staff at Gary’s are passionate and extremely knowledgeable about even the most obscure cuts of meat. I love to slow cook lamb ribs for hours and then toss them in a spicy marinade and finish them off on the grill. They don’t just know what I am talking about. They have it!

Not surprisingly, Gary’s Meats was the winner of the 2015 Prahran Market Sausage Fest.

Gary’s Meats also runs a series of butchering classes perfect for the hobby farmer or barbeque master who wants to make their own sausages from scratch.

Theo & Sons Fresh Seafood

Theo & Sons Fresh Seafood

Fishmonger • Stall 502

For hand-shucked Tasmanian oysters to order (all year round), prawns and for great local ethically-caught seasonal fish.

Fritz Gelato

Fritz Gelato

Ice-Cream • Stall 120

For award-winning organic ice-cream, gelato and sorbet, you can’t go home without stopping at Fritz Gelato. It’s based on traditional Italian recipes with a contemporary twist, in flavours that are truly irresistible; salted caramel, caramelised fig and roasted almond, pistachio heaven, raspberry rumble, just to name a few. I also love their delicious organic doughnuts piped with jam, as well as their coffee and milkshakes. With over 70 industry awards, it’s not surprising this ‘secret’ is truly out there.

The Essential Ingredient

General Merchandise/Specialty Foods
Open: Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm
Sat 8am - 5pm, Sun 10am - 4pm

A cornucopia of culinary delights, Essential Ingredient is just that – essential ingredients, cookbooks and cookware for both home cooks and chefs.

Patisserie • Stall 122

I head to Noîsette with my son to buy a pain au chocolate’s for us while we shop. They are truly amazing, as good as any you can find in Paris. But there are also a variety of freshly baked breads, pastries, slices, doughnuts and much more. Try their sourdough, baguettes, croissants (including almond), fruit Danishes and Portuguese tarts.

To be honest, I think the pains are for me as much as for my son!

Sweet Greek

Sweet Greek

Home Made Meals • Stall 702

I head to Sweet Greek when I don’t feel like cooking and stock up on their homemade meals. My family adores them. Their Spanakopita’s are the best I’ve tasted. They’re available in three tempting flavours, quite possibly the best in Melbourne!

Or enjoy a mouth-watering selection of traditional ready-to-eat dishes and take-home meals (including moussaka, keftedes, yemista and dolmades) alongside fresh salads, an assortment of delectable cakes, pastries and specialty grocery items (gluten free options available).

Speak to Kathy and her team for delicious homemade Greek cuisine. Don’t leave without asking for the delectable loukoumades (honey doughnuts)!

Delicatessen • Stall 706

This is my go to deli. All the produce is excellent and like me, they love talking about food with customers who are as passionate. This was one of the first places in Melbourne you could buy roquefort (a raw sheep’s milk cheese) – a seriously great cheese!

Delicatess is also known for its Spanish jamon as well as an excellent selection of well-kept local and international cheeses and accompaniments. Peter and the team are equipped and ready to help you with your next deli shop… raw milk cheese, local and imported cheese, ham off the bone, traditional chorizo, cured olives, cold smoked salmon, antipasto, condiments, chutneys... do I need to say more!
