Ron and his wife Leoni had been living in a two-storey Victorian terrace home for the past 13 years. They would drive straight into their garage, rarely communicating with their neighbours. “We thought it was the right time to move, while we’re still young enough,” says Ron, who runs an advertising and marketing consultancy in the city named ‘It’s The Thought That Counts’.

For the couple, moving from South Yarra to the Fawkner Residences was literally a short walk across the park (not including all the packing up that was required in the move). “I’ve always loved the area, particularly the park,” says Leoni, who still regularly rises at 6am to work out with her personal trainer in the park. Ron and Leoni are also ‘grandparents’ to one of their adult children’s pugs named Nacho. “Fawkner Park as are the apartments, is pet friendly,” adds Leoni.

The Mathers purchased their two-bedroom apartment on the Fawkner Park side of the building, feeling as though they were ‘sitting in the treetops’. When the couple walked in to view the display apartment, the words were ‘Yes, we can live here’. The space and its views, with the fact they could never lose their view (the park is a constant rather than the emergence of another residential tower), was an attractive proposition. The display apartment that was finally purchased by the Mathers was also serendipitously the advertising office in which Ron first worked when he came from London 40 years ago. “There is certainly that sense of familiarity,” says Ron.

The Mathers came to The Fawkner Residences with a considerable amount of art, with Ron’s own drawings forming part of this collection. “Ron and I were pleased we could take most of the art with us. There’s generous wall space for large paintings,” says Leoni.

While the second bedroom is used as Ron’s studio, the couple enjoys sitting on the balcony and looking over the park. “From the second floor, we feel like we are actually in the park and not just observing it from a distance,” says Ron, who feels at times that he is staying at a swank hotel. “Leonie and I love to travel, but it’s also important that a place feels like a home.” Having the amenities on their doorstep has also become integral to their daily lives. “When we first inspected our apartment, the pool wasn’t quite finished. We didn’t really value all the facilities, including the concierge, but now we’re in we really enjoy these features,” he adds.

The couple also appreciates the other residents they have met in lifts, car parks or the communal areas. “It’s a diverse community, with different ages, nationalities and backgrounds,” says Leoni. “And we can still walk to the shops in South Yarra and frequent all the places we have loved for the last 13 years,” she adds.
