The 20-metre-long swimming pool, framed by travertine floors, includes a plunge pool and a separate spa, accessed by broad steps and ideal after coming out of a sauna. And while floor-to-ceiling glazing sharpens the city sights, generous skylights above wash the clear blue water with pools of light. The pool, with its ‘infinity’ edge’ creates a sense of floating above Melbourne’s premier boulevard. “Les wanted to create a strong connection to the outdoors wherever you happened to be in the building. He’s mindful of people leaving behind their back gardens and having verdant outlooks here,” says Hamilton.

As well as having a sense of the outdoors from the swimming pool, there’s the complete outdoors in the central courtyard at the podium level. Completely exposed to the sky, this idyllic retreat also offers respite during the colder months of the year when the chilly winds can be felt walking along St. Kilda Road or boarding a tram.

The podium level also has a large gymnasium. And like the swimming pool, it benefits from full northern light and views over the gardens. Nearby is a multi-functional room that could be used for either a library, a yoga room, and given the demographics of many residents, a play area for grandchildren. While this space has not been earmarked in ‘concrete’, its use will be determined by residents’ consensus.

One of the most coveted spaces on the podium level is the generous northern terrace, centred on a curvaceous stone bar (complete with fridge drawers), together with both dining and lounge seating arrangements, the finest in alfresco dining. “It was important from the outset that residents were given a multitude of options when it came to entertaining, or simply relaxing,” says Javens. “This space reminds me of a great cocktail bar in a flight lounge,” he adds.
