L’ Hotel Gitan (French for gypsy), located in Commercial Road, Prahran (a short walk from Punt Road), was originally The Max, and one of the neighbourhood’s best ‘watering holes’. But the reborn pub, under the guidance of the Reymond family and SJB Interiors, is now more befitting of this gentrified precinct. “Our clients didn’t want the place to feel intimidating but rather that people felt comfortable eating or drinking on a regular basis, enjoying casual French fare,” says interior designer Leo Terrando, Associate with SJB Interiors, who worked closely with SJB’s director, interior designer Andrew Parr.

Rather than create one large dining experience at L’ Hotel Gitan, SJB Interiors created a variety of settings. The front portion, adjacent to the bar, features benches and bar stools. However, as one progresses through the space, the dining experience becomes more formal, with booth-style seating and individual tables set with white linen. And for those wanting a little more privacy, there’s the booth with an intimate setting for six people. Those wishing to entertain for a larger group can also book the private function room. At the heart of the hotel is an open kitchen where whole pigs rotate on a rotisserie, crepes are flipped and charcuterie is sliced to order. The specials menu changes regularly, based on seasonal ingredients along with the chef’s inspiration. “It has that slight reference to the gypsy mood fondly recalled in the 1960s in Paris,” says Terrando.

One of the charming features of SJB’s design is the subtle blending of period and contemporary. The built-in furniture, with its contrast piping and button-backed lounges, evoke the 1930s, as do the wallpapers with their faded foliage pattern.
