Barrister Craig Hobbs is looking forward to retiring at the end of this year. Based in Hobart, he intends travelling more often and spending more time in Broadbeach, Queensland, where he owns an apartment. Hobbs recently purchased a one-bedroom apartment at the Fawkner Residences.

“I started looking for an apartment in Melbourne about four years ago, initially looking at a number of websites.” Hobbs looked at all the CBD apartments that had recently been completed along with those that were under construction. “I had a folder with printouts of about 30 developments either located in the city or at Southbank,” says Hobbs, who was tempted to purchase an apartment in Spring Street on a higher level than the one he purchased at The Fawkner Residences (located on the second floor).

One of Hobbs’ concerns with the Spring Street apartment located to the rear of the tower was the outlook, with roofs dotted with bulky air conditioning units. “With my apartment at Broadbeach, I look out and see rooftop swimming pools and even tennis courts on top of towers.” This particular Melbourne CBD apartment came with a price tag of $735,000, while the Fawkner Residences apartment was purchased off the plan for $600,000.

The Fawkner apartment has one bedroom and is approximately 69 square-metres in area including a ten-square-metre balcony. Orientated to the west to St Kilda Road, Hobbs was attracted to the location outside the CBD and as importantly, the vibe on the wide and leafy boulevard. “You still feel connected to the city, but there’s ‘breathing space’ and it’s considerably less frenetic,” says Hobbs, who enjoys seeing people stroll along under the canopies.

Hobbs not only appreciates the vistas from his apartment, but also the sense of arrival through the dramatic lobby and foyer that leads to his lift. “This apartment isn’t as large as the one I own in Queensland, but it’s large enough and as comfortable,” says Hobbs, who will be furnishing this apartment after retirement with furniture from his offices in Hobart. “This apartment will be perfect for my travels between Hobart and Broadbeach, where friends (from Hobart) can also visit while they’re over here for the football.”

Hobbs isn’t drawn to Melbourne’s football scene, but rather to its restaurants and cultural events. He’s also into fitness and will enjoy using the Fawkner’s gymnasium every day as well as its indoor pool.
