From the moment I stepped on the land at 499 St Kilda Road in 2012, I realised it was special.

I was first impressed by the very generous acre and a half (more than 6,000m2) of absolute park front land, flanked by Melbourne’s famed 101-acre Fawkner Park on the east and one of Melbourne’s grand tree lined boulevard’s on the west.

But what really struck me were the breathtaking views I witnessed from each window as I wandered through the original office building. When I discovered the shrine overlay protected the views back to the city, while the tennis courts and their neighbouring heritage protected sites across the road protect the view lines to Albert Park Lake and Port Phillip Bay, I knew the site would lend itself perfectly to premium apartments.

The original building had great bones. I wanted to take advantage of the generous ceiling heights and siting. The building was also positioned in a way that we could remove the original building’s entrance and create half an acre (approximately 1800m2) of onsite private gardens. Doing this meant every single apartment at The Fawkner Residences benefits from abundant natural light and unimpeded views, irrespective of its position in the building or size. Reinforcing this was my personal experience during 2010 and 2011. I found out firsthand how difficult it was to find an apartment that met my needs. I didn’t want to feel hemmed in or have that sense of claustrophobia you often get living in apartments, particularly as my former home was surrounded by gardens. I thought this frustration in finding a comfortable inner-city apartment that was more generous than the typical apartment would also be on the minds of others, and so the vision for The Fawkner Residences was born: a collection of apartments designed to function as a luxuriously appointed family home. One that came with all the amenity you would expect from such a home, but with none of the upkeep. Low maintenance living without compromise!
