“My preconception was primarily of office towers dotted with a few residential apartment blocks. However, having worked at the site office of The Fawkner Residences for the last six months, as it begins its transformation, I can honestly say that this leafy promenade offers considerably more than simply a picturesque boulevard, often touted as Melbourne’s finest.”

Most Melbournians, including myself, regularly drive or take a tram down St. Kilda Road. I always felt I knew this area intimately. My preconception was primarily of office towers dotted with a few residential apartment blocks. However, having worked at the site office of The Fawkner Residences for the last six months, and as it begins its transformation into a collection of bespoke apartments, I can honestly say this leafy promenade offers considerably more than simply a picturesque boulevard. Yes, there are the vistas and panoramic views that draw people to the area, but there is also a treasure-trove of places to visit and shop right on the doorstep. I can now see why people are moving to St. Kilda Road and leaving behind their family homes.

For those contemplating a move to an apartment, questions inevitably arise: Will there be great restaurants nearby? Where will I shop? Will I have parks to take my dog for walks or simply for my own pleasure? Can the views be built out? Will I be continually getting into my car or can I lose this dependence? Sitting in traffic has become a bugbear of mine! And what will this neighbourhood offer that wasn’t previously available to me in my current environment?

Like most people who have lived for years in the same house, you become familiar with all that is around you. You know when houses in the street change as new owners move in. It’s the same when new shops or restaurants appear in your local shopping centre. What I’ve noticed in the past six months since working here is how many wonderful places there are to visit. I’ve come across architectural gems that I had never really noticed before. This made me much more inquisitive about some of the local landmarks. I took the next step of finding out about their architects or their significance. There’s a fascinating history here and I think you’ll be impressed with the richness of architectural history surrounding The Fawkner. Everything I’ve discovered is less than a kilometre from The Fawkner’s doorstep. You’ll discover a different perspective of what could become your new neighbourhood.

It has taken me six months to discover the nuances of this place but this guide will hopefully shorten that process for you.

Enjoy the discovery!
